North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley

north_of_beautiful.jpgYou could call her the perfect girl. She's tall, blond, and has an enviable body. But once she turns her face, it's a whole new story. Terra has been born almost beautiful, but with the exception of the huge red birthmark that spread across the right side of her face. She's very self-concious, and tries to hide it with makeup and tries to make it go away with treatments for her skin. As long as she tried, she hash't found anything yet that could cure her face. She tries to leave her town to go to a college far out in the east, but gets pushed off course because of her demanding and ambitious father. On the way she encounters a guy named Jacob, who changes the aspect of her life rather quickly, and made her think about her life in a different lens. Although, Terra must stay on path, and she will make the right choice in the end.

  1. My favorite young adult book. I agree, it makes you think about family, relationships. I also think it challenges your ideas about what's beautiful. And in the end, she's beautiful because of her mark, not in spite of it. Jacob helps her see that.
